Hristo Goleminov (1997) is a saxophonist, composer and multi-instrumentalist based in Amsterdam (NL). His interests include free improvisation, researching composition in the 17th/18th centuries, dense contrapuntal writing, improvising/composing over poetry, and more.
In 2023 he released the album ‘Ground Wire’ on BIMHUIS Records, which resulted from of a year-long residency at BIMHUIS Productions as a Nieuwe Maker, researching compostional techniques borrowing from baroque music. He also shares a duo with Vera Morais (voice) focused on exploring the lines between poetry and improvisation. Their album ‘Consider the Plums’ was released in September 2022 under the Portuguese label Carimbo Porta-Jazz.
He is an active sideman in the Dutch and Portuguese scenes (on tenor/alto saxophone, bass clarinet, and the occasional flute), in projects led by composers such as Ben van Gelder, Siebren Smink, Ilia Rayskin, Jort Terwijn, Vera Morais, Bernard van Rossum, Matteo Mazzù, Josué Santos and Gianni Narduzzi. He’s a co-founder of Orbits, an Amsterdam-based collective seeking to showcase and develop the city’s improvised music scene.
He studied classical saxophone in EPME (Espinho, Portugal) and later in ESMAE (Porto, Portugal) with Henk van Twillert and Gilberto Bernardes, where he obtained bachelor and master’s degrees. He studied jazz with Manuel Marques as a teenager, and later at Conservatorium van Amsterdam (NL) with Jasper Blom and Ben van Gelder, also obtaining bachelor and master’s degrees.
